Utah Hiking

Utah’s diverse landscape makes it a popular spot for day hikers and hearty backpackers. With its cornucopia of very remote areas and stunningly beautiful scenes, a Utah hiking trip can be anywhere from a mere “pleasant walk” to a nature-friendly outdoors adventure. Through a Utah hiking trip, you’ll find that once you get off the beaten path on foot or even on horseback, the state’s mountains and deserts will “open up” for you in many unexpected ways.

The state boasts of five prominent Utah hiking regions, namely Wasatch Front, Northern Mountains, Dinosaurland, Great Basin, and Red Rock. In addition, the section of the Great Western Trail that provides Utah hiking also offers great opportunities for snowmobiling, ATVing, and other fun activities.

Wasatch Front

This is where Utah’s urban corridor lies. To the east is the spectacular Wasatch Mountain range and to the west is the desert terrain of the Great Basin. Utah hiking and backpacking experiences of every variety are found just moments away from any of the cities in this area. Some of the great Utah hiking trails within a short distance from the Wasatch Front region include:

Alexander Basin Trail
Desolation Trail
Great Western Trail
Lake Blanche Trail
Lake Mary Trail
Mill B. North Fork Trail
Mineral Fork Trail
Mount Olympus Trail
Timpanogos Cave Trail
White Pine Trail

Utah hiking along Mount Olympus Trail will have you starting right at the foot of Mount Olympus along Wasatch Boulevard. The Utah hiking that this trail offers is a strenuous one, but exciting, offering you great views of the Salt Lake Valley.

Another excellent Utah hiking opportunity offered in this region is the Ogden River Parkway, which is a beautiful 3.3 mile area for walking, biking, picnicking, and fishing. The parkway is conveniently located adjacent to the Ogden River, right in the city of Ogden.

Northern Mountains

Next to the Wasatch Front, another great Utah hiking region is the Northern Mountains. It offers many Utah hiking trails, including Deep Canyon – Coldwater Canyon Trail, Naomi Peak Trail, and part of the Great Western Trail.

In addition to that, Utah hiking opportunities are also offered outside Logan in northern Utah. One example is a pleasant Utah hiking, that is more like walking, in the one-mile Limber Pine Trail loop at the summit of Logan Canyon overlooking Bear Lake. Another is an autumn ¾-mile Utah hiking to Coldwater Lake near Mendon. This Utah hiking trail often lures hikers further up the trail through the red maples and golden aspen in to the dense forests of the Wellsville Wilderness.

The Skyline Trailhead right atop the North Ogden Pass, 5 miles east of North Ogden, offers several Utah hiking. You can take a Utah hiking trail up a 9-mile trek to the 9,712-foot summit of Ben Lomon Peak. There is also the Pineview Trailhead leads to a 22-mile Utah hiking trail ending in Willard Basin. Several more Utah hiking trails are scattered through the Wasatch-Cache National Forest in Davis Country.
